Field Notes

Description:

Nesting pair of what we believe to be Ferruginous Hawks a few miles south of the Columbia River and about 120 miles east of Portland, Oregon (near Blalock Canyon Road). Nest is in solitary tree surrounded by rolling wheat fields. Dark band noted behind eye. White chest with scattered brown streaks. Tail mostly white.

Habitat:

Rolling aggricultural land near Columbia River Gorge.

Notes:

Male and female were observed flying low over agricultural fields, apparently hunting, and both briefly left nest to perch on nearby powerline poles or on the ground in recently planted wheat field (about 6-inch growth). Not well-observed in flight, but chest and tail were mostly white. Will try to get definitive photos on next visit.

Beautiful! Such a "lippy" bird! They look like they're smiling! So unique! Definitely a Ferrug!
