Description:

Echinocactus plants are large or small, globose to broadly columnar, carrying wool at the apex; The areolas are large and far between in the young plants and closer as adults. The radial and central spines. Flowers are arranged in the crown-shaped tip, of medium size, yellow in the subgenus Echinocactus, giving rise to fruits of the same color, and very dry wool in the subgenus Homalocephala flowers are pink-purple, leading to semicarnosos fruits, red and little wool. The seeds are large, slightly reniform.

Habitat:

Las especies del subgénero Echinocactus se encuentran, por un lado, al sur del Eje Neovolcánico, en la localidad de Tehuacán en el estado mexicano de Puebla, y, por otro, al norte en la Altiplanicie Mexicana, desde Hidalgo hasta Nuevo León, abarcando Querétaro, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí y Zacatecas; E. polycephalus y E. parryi crecen en Chihuahua y Sonora, y el primero llega hasta Nevada y Utah.
Las especies del subgénero Homalocephala se distribuyen entre Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas y el sur de Nuevo México y Texas.
