Field Notes

Description:

This small moth with blotches of black, cream and grey on the wings and a fuzzy yellow head has caterpillars that live on lichen. This moth appears to have emerged from the white and orange pupa with its protective outer "skin" of long hairs from the mother caterpillar.

Habitat:

Spotted on the trunk of a spotted gum (Corymbia maculata) - pic 3.

Notes:

The female of the species is wingless and has been spotted beside its hairy cocoon covered with eggs as in : <br>

Thank you Jim & Daniele. Wouldn't it be fascinating to see the hairy cocoon being built ?! Daniele, I am still around will probably get more active now that the weather's warming-up. Have been distracted by a few other things lately.
