Field Notes

Description:

A small bird with a blackish head (and a more or less prominent crest depending on the subspecies), and an unmistakable red vent. The body is dark brown with a scaly pattern, the belly white, and the tail dark with white tips. Originally from south Asia, has established itself in the United Arab Emirates where this individual was spotted.

Habitat:

Dry scrub, open forest, plains and cultivated lands.

Notes:

LadenTamang from Sikkim mentioned the red-vented Bulbul yesterday in response to my spotting of a white-eared bulbul (http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6018792), and I happen to just spot one today in the same Abu Dhabi park…
