Common Milkweed seeds
Asclepias syriaca
46.9208, -95.5952
Field Notes
Description:
Milkweed fruit are elongated, green dry pods that split open to release many flat, brown seeds, each attached to hair-like fuzz that carries the seed away on the wind.
Habitat:
Many milkweed seed pods were found on the road leading to the Job Corp site on Hwy 126. Milkweed can be located in a variety of habitat including areas that are wet or dry, sunny, and with shade.
Notes:
The Monarch butterfly lays its eggs exclusively on milkweeds. Monarch caterpillars ingest the toxic sap with no ill effects, but they then become toxic to birds and other animals.
