Description:
Thayer's gull is a relatively large seagull with much of its body - head, neck, breast, belly, and all but the tips of its underwings - mostly white, with some light brownish streaking on its head and neck. Its legs are pink. In summer, the bill is a bright yellow with a discernible red spot on the lower mandible. Wingtips are black.
Habitat:
Seagulls are found on every continent, while Thayer's gulls are native to North America.
Notes:
I captured this image while out boating in Broad Bay in Virginia Beach. Numerous seagulls were landing and taking off from the inland bay. I shut the engine down and drifted slightly, as it was pretty much slack tide. With a light wind mostly at my back, it was only a short while before this seagull took off into the wind mostly toward me and slightly offset.
