Field Notes

Description:

Striking African purple-eyed bird spotted on the banks of River Niger, in Niamey. Black beak and body, tail with scaly patterns, black and white wings.

Habitat:

River bank with trees and bushes.

Notes:

In a group of 5-10. Pic 4 shows juveniles. Found only in tropical equatorial regions of Africa.

Thanks ceherzog! I've finally found it: it's a piapiac, a bird specific to tropical Africa. The individuals with the partly red beak are juveniles. Thanks to HemantKumar for orienting me towards Corvidae! (I have a list of all 529 (!) birds of Niger but no pictorial guide...).
