Field Notes

Description:

Agrocybe pediades, also known as "common fieldcap", is a small agaric fungus in the family Strophariaceae. Yellow-brown in colour, cap diameter 3.5 - 4 cm, at first rounded to convex, then broadly convex to plane. Gills were adnate and close, and the stipe was about 4 cm long, central to the cap with no ring. This is a common northern hemisphere species which was probably unintentionally introduced into Australia.

Habitat:

Spotted along a dirt track near the Mt. Norman day use area in Girraween National Park. Dry sclerophyll forest with sandy granite soils, substantial undergrowth and accumulated leaf litter, and foliage much greener and lush since the drought has broken. Exposed to full-sun for most of the day, although there were some areas that were still damp and muddy from recent rain*. Here's some park info - http://www.rymich.com/girraween/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girraween_National_Park

Notes:

A good local reference - Fungi in Australia (pages 442-443) - http://www.fncv.org.au/wp-content/uploads/publications/fungi_in_austral… *This species prefers moist conditions, and is particularly fond of grassy areas like pastures and meadows, hence is a common lawn fungus, but it can also be found in mulch, dung or sand. There's more sand than grass in Girraween.
