Field Notes

Habitat:

found in a wide variety of habitats, including slow-moving rivers, floodplain swamps, marshes, seasonal wetlands, and permanent ponds. Native to SE U.S.

Notes:

This is one of two babies found at a relatives fish pond. They were very recently hatched, as you can see in the first photo, the "bellybutton" where the egg yolk was attached is still visible.

love this cute guy so much... I wish I had one too.....
That is the cutest li'l turtle ever! Thank you for sharing!!!
LOL. Hadn't thought of that. We could name him Tintoretto, Toddler Mutant Ninja Turtle. lol
Absolutely adorable, and great timing with the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie coming out. lol
Thanks. I guess only placental mammals have true belly buttons ( the scar left by detachment of the umbilical cord), that's why I wrote " belly button". I'm sure that feature seen here where the yolk sack was attached has a technical name which I don't know. I think that the turtle's "belly button" is not a permanent feature and disappears as they grow.
It's belly kind of looks like a face! :)
Great spotting of this little guy. I didn't know they had a belly button.
