Notes:

I saw this flower long time ago in the Páramo zone of the Nevado del Ruiz, a volcano near my city. It elevation is about 5,321 m (17,457 ft), but I saw it at 3,100 m maybe.
The word Páramo in english means desolate territory.

Cool spot! After a bit of digging I'm pretty sure this is a Senecio. Seems like there are a couple of species with purple flowering stems in the Páramo but I think this one most resembles a fading Senecio formosus: http://caminaeko.wordpress.com/2011/03/18/flora-arnica/

Yes Dan, I looked for them yesterday but it is an extensive search! And I don't know about plants so I gave up :( I'm gonna work on it! I really want to show people the beautiful flora you can see here.

Do you think Gynura is a possibility? I would love to see more spottings from the wilds of Columbia!

The stems look similar to Gynura. I think its definitely in the Aster family. Google image Gynura for more photos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gynura

I know! I'm not a big fan of plants (because I don't know anything about them), but I saw this one because the color got my attention.
