Field Notes

Description:

Girlfriend found this on her car; I guessed it was some kind of wasp, but it was bigger than any I had seen before; 3-4 inches wide and 9-10 long with the long tail.

At that size it might be a Megarhyssa sp. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megarhyssa http://bugguide.net/node/view/4158
Female ichneumon wasp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichneumonoidea I would wait for at least a genus-level identification to add the scientific name though
