Rose of Plymouth
Sabatia stellaris

Field Notes
Description:
A distinctive flower with twisted or curly stigma and an interesting pattern at the center. The base of each petal is yellow with three jagged points outlined in red or maroon, often with a faint white "glow" around it. The rest of each petal is pink to magenta. I noticed that alongside the color difference in the pink/magenta part of the petal, the red border around the yellow part was also quite variable. In the third photo, you can see a thick, bold border that appeared more maroon, while many of the other flowers had a thin red border. Blade-like sepals and thin leaves. Very plentiful on this trail, seemingly all in full bloom.
Habitat:
Alongside the 7-mile Loop Trail in the Crystal River Preserve State Park. I saw them in grassy patches growing in the limestone-rich dirt.
Notes:
Some had velvety-looking stigma and others had a thinner, smooth stigma (photo 3). I am not sure if these are male and female flowers or not, as I had a hard time finding any resources with an explanation, but that is my best guess.
