Thanks (belatedly) to dandoucette and to maplemoth662. It is one of the 9 moths on my new display photo at home - hard to choose 9.
Thanks Polilla. I am tending to upload insects that I like but have no idea what they are on this site. Few are as appealing to me as this one.
Thanks for telling me how to search Daniele. I can't see it Mark!
Hi Les! The criteria for nomination and voting in SOTW are listed in the nomination comment you received. For searches, there is a Search bar under the Organisms page. Type in metalmark moth and you'll get lots of hits. You can also search from Google using Project Noah + any keyword of your choice.
Thanks triggsturner, Gilmar and DrN. Clearly being chosen for whatever reason for SOTW gives photos far more coverage. I have not yet worked out how I could search for thongs on Project Noah as I would like to see other metallic moths.
Hello to all, if you could also help me to ID this http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/523957530
Thanks for responding. Though this was my star day-flying moth, I saw so many I really like that I think I will start to upload a few more over the coming weeks.
Congratulations Les ! Looks like an African chieftain with a cat skin cloak. and yes, I am related to Mark; he's my husband.
Thanks Leauba (related to Mark?), Sergio and Mark. It was my favourite of very many nice day-flying moths seen on the trip.
Congratulations Les, this striking moth has been voted Spotting of the Week! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/projectnoah/photos/a.10150595289465603.674700.10150120463815603/10158104597965603/?type=3&theater Twitter: https://twitter.com/projectnoah/status/820770071232610304
Thanks. I had not picked up that information. Not often moths (as opposed to butterflies) are used.
ID looks good to me Les. Did you notice it was used on one of Paraguay's postal stamps? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudatteria_leopardina#/media/File:Pseudatteria_leopardina_1976_Paraguay_stamp.jpg
Thanks. The moth is great but I can't say that about my information on it!
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated Les!
The Manu Road is fantastic for wildlife. It is mainly visited by birders but is unbelievably good for insects. Not easy to reach.
Thanks Mark. I am delighted on the few occasions I see a metalmark moth, just sorry none of my photos were sharp.
Thanks Gilma. The second suggestion is similar and based on that I think I have found a match.
Tiger moth covers a huge selection of moths. I know little about moths but this is such a distinctive one that I hope someone will recognise it. Limited chance I guess as there are so many moths and very few in this region will have been studied.
