Field Notes

Description:

This pine is a large, long-lived evergreen. Specimens often live for 200-300 years, but individuals have been cored and determined to be at least 500 years old. Branches often turn up at their tips and older trees lose their symmetry and become craggy (see photo). Needles are in bundles of five and are 2-5 inches long. Cones are slender and brown.

Habitat:

White pines prefer well-drained soils and cool climates.

Notes:

I took this photograph while on a wilderness canoe trip in northern Minnesota.

Thanks to both of you for the nice comments (although it is really a late thank you to you Luc!). I really like these big trees and with red pine they dominate the skyline as super-canopy trees in the Boundary Waters.
LOVE IT! My favorite tree of all time.... So majestic!!!!
Wow! Gordon is a beautiful picture you took. The shadows of pine trees on a sky on fire. I love your picture :)
