Deshu,rains and storms could be very damaging considering the monsoons which you have there. But I am assuming that thorns could also tear the wings too .
Some predator might have tried to take a bite out of the butterfly too!
Wild creatures have to face all kinds of dangers! it is a rough world out there.
The age of the caterpillar is usually decided by measuring its head capsule.
Age of the butterfly? young or adult?

@ Deshu,this one does not seem that badly damaged. As long as he can maintain his balance while flying ,he should be Okay. He has also retained his scales which are so important for camouflaging.
This butterfly does not look very young . Wear and tear is a normal part of the aging process.
If they live long enough, many butterflies and moths end up losing many of their scales, so it's a natural process after all.
