Field Notes

Notes:

ok...ready to believe it is a Tarchon Felderi but a variation...those with the black markings and those with plain markings should produce different moth coloration as well...we'll just leave it as a Tarchon Felderi...the national butterfly of Panama...

Survival Man: "Hey, look! A piece of ragged red carpet...humans and civilization can't be far!" Mother Nature:"No way, José! Next human being is 800 Miles away. Good luck."
Congrats Matthew, your caterpillar made spotting of the day! "Shag-carpet caterpillars have thick coats of red-colored "hair" or setae, interwoven with a white carpet-like pattern" http://facebook.com/projectnoah/posts/208879159150927 http://twitter.com/projectnoah/status/74901944296153088
Looks like a piece wool...strange world we live in :~)
What the... I thought this was a plant, or maybe some kind of funky moss. But a caterpillar?! I don't think I'll ever stop being amazed at nature! Fab spot!!!
Had I not seen it here, I might have thought it was some mysterious kitchen gadget made of rubbery-plastic. I'll bet it fools the birds.
Everyone amazed with nature's special creations..Good show Matthew..!!
I think Carolina's right, check this one out it doesn't have black coloration http://biodiversityphotography.smugmug.com/For-Identification/Invertebrates-Insects/Lepidoptera-Larvae/4688670_robom/1/277259278_ZYKBt#277259278_ZYKBt-A-LB
Do you know in what kind of moth it will become?
Yes you right, it really looks like. Check this one: http://www.flickriver.com/photos/artour_a/257883481/ What if yours was missing the black marks, but they appeared later?
resembles...the tarchon felderi larva...only this individual had absolutely no black markings...may be a new species or a variation of the tarchon...solidly red and white from every angle...
That is insane! I have never seen anything like it! What a spotting!!
Is that a caterpillar? I saw the thumbnail and I thought it was a plant!
