Field Notes

Description:

The Apple-green Swallowtail or Green Banded Swallowtail (Papilio phorcas) is a butterfly of the Papilionidae family. It is found in Africa.

I saw these butterflies everywhere in the Ugandan Rainforest, especially along the forest edges. A iridescent blue/green streak whizzing past. They rarely stopped except in the early morning, or to light on a flower for a second to sip nectar. Barely long enough even to focus!

Habitat:

All through the rainforest and along the edges verging on paths and roads.

Notes:

Maramagambo Forest is located in Bushenyi, Uganda, closet to the border with The Congo. It is part of the Queen Elizabeth National Park and is located in the southern part of the forest.
