Description:

Thanks to dandoucette for identifying this. Herbaceous strongly-propagating annual with many uses, and it is edible (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galium_aparine). Herbaceous and native to North America and Eurasia. Displays stacked whorls of leaves. Flowers spring to summer. Common name attributable to tendency to stick to anything it can grasp with its Velcro-like hooks.

Habitat:

Common around hedges and shrubby vegetation. Hangs out near the bases of trees on our property.
