Field Notes

Description:

Considered a shore bird, but found year-round in much of the U.S. Nests on open ground, displaying "broken wing" behavior to distract predators. Some of these birds were dragging a wing if standing, or spreading a wing if on the ground, perhaps they had nearby nests.

Habitat:

Many killdeers today in the grassy landscape of a small college. The ones in the photos were around a parking lot, small road and ditch, fairly near the tree line ... another group was enjoying a big puddle left over from recent rains.

Notes:

They always look worried to me ...
