Field Notes

Description:

A large dragonfly - 2" long. Each wing has three black patches at base, midpoint and tip. In mature males, white spots form between the black ones. There are two yellow colored stripes on side of thorax that disappear with age. Abdomen is chalky white.

Habitat:

Ponds, lakes and slow-moving backwaters. Also seen away from water in clearings. They are perchers and will often return to the same branch or piece of vegetation after each short food flight.
