Field Notes

Description:

Striking red-capped, red-eyed bird. A fine example of color-blocking in nature, if you ask me.

Habitat:

This bird was spotted hopping around in Keokea Beach Park.

Notes:

The last picture is of a different individual, seen on a different day. Paroaria capitata is native to Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay, and northern Argentina and was therefore introduced to Hawaii.

Cool Mauna. Very similar to the Red-crested Cardinal (Paroaria coronata) found in South America, without the crest of course. Striking colors. Good catch.

When I am at the mission station we have internet, providing the river isn't too high or too low. We have electricity from a hydro plant on the river. The road made it's way into the village where the mission station is a couple years ago (a mixed blessing) and the internet followed shortly after.
