Alice, thanks! :) Yeah, another birder told me a few days ago that they'd seen a Red-Headed Woodpecker in the area and I was so surprised I asked if they weren't confusing it with a Downy or Red-Bellied, since we get tons of those out here. Then I saw him in the tree yesterday. He was *just* at the edge of what my lens can handle. I'm hoping if I go back soon, he'll come down a little lower. :)
In New Jersey in the 1970's we were on the Philadelphia Bird Hot line so people could come see our Red-headed woodpecker. I can't remember seeing any since. Thanks for the picture.
To be crazy specific, he was in a tree just north of the Notebaert Museum, between the actual pond and Stockton Ave.
wow ! I think i can visualize this location because This is the route i took when i worked at Grant hospital.
