Description:

I spotted this gopher snake outside my cabin when I heard chipmunk alarm calls. The snake was trying to steal the chipmunk's babies from her nest, so she carried them all to higher ground. The snake left unsuccessful.

Habitat:

Good lookin' snake there. The gopher snake is very closely related to the bull snake that is somewhat common in the plains of western and northwestern Missouri, where it the state's largest snake. Still haven't photographed one in the wild... someday!
