Description:

I'd guess they're red ants, but they're really far more brown/yellow/orange than red.

Small nest under a plant pot, no more than 20 ants outside the nest

They also have a pheromone that they release that is very smelly.
This is also scientifically known as Lasius flavus.

Ants are really fascinating animals, but they've been around a very long time and have undergone a lot of evolution and speciation. They have also been widely spread from their native habitat to others. As a result, it may be difficult to ID these to the genus level.
