Field Notes

Description:

From the Wikipedia Page: When with other turtles, they also are very communal, sharing space and using each other for predator watching, increasing the odds of surviving an attack by any unwanted animal.

Which explains why every time I saw one of these, they were hanging out with the bigger, more obvious, painted turtles. :)

Habitat:

North Pond, Chicago, IL

I think you're right. It took a while, but I finally found a site that showed the 'backwards L' on a false map, and the spot on the Northern Map. Thanks!
I think this could be a Northern Map Turtle (Graptemys geographica.) They are know to have that yellow postorbital triangle.
