Field Notes

Description:

These Sykes' monkeys readily approach visitors at the ruins of Gedi, in Eastern Kenya. The local guides named them Osama (seen with a banana), and Saddam, who was the larger of the pair. The local boys who took us there stopped for bananas on the way there, anticipating a run-in with these little beggars, and the guides had no problem allowing me to hand Osama a piece of fruit when he approached me. It wasn't until afterward that he turned to me and said, "It is written... do not feed the monkeys. They may carry disease."
