Although Caligo uranus caterpillars (and adults) appear very similar, I don't believe this species is flown in butterfly houses, while C. atreus is commonly farmed for that purpose. Just speaking from personal experience.

Christiane, I edited the spotting for you :) I knew that Caligo is a genus of owl butterfly, so I looked it up and the English name is the Gold-edged Owl Butterfly! Also fixed the spelling of the scientific name! Hope that's alright :)

I have finally found the ID for this weird animal! It is the caterpillar of the Bananenfalter Calligo uranus ( Sorry only have a German translation!!) ...

I'm afraid I've struck out as well. I spent about 20 minutes searching for possibilities the other night while watching some TV. Maybe I just wasn't into it, but couldn't really find anything.

Is the plant in a conservatory? It looks like a Strelitzia, White Bird of Paradise. Is that an insect on it or part of the plant?
