Field Notes

Description:

These fruiting bodies were slightly firm supported by hairy stalks about 50mm tall. The smooth ball caps were about 20 mm wide with a central opening which had a raised star-shaped orange lip.

Habitat:

Spotted in sodden soil on the sloping side of a track. <br> Occurrence record:

Notes:

This stalked puffball is called Calostoma or pretty mouth because of the raised orange stoma, which is quite attractive. <br>
The spore-containing peridium is three-layered and protected by a harder cap which falls off at maturity.The inner sac is then exposed and when under pressure, releases its spores through its opening. <br>
