35.7807, -78.7894
Field Notes
Description:
This bird's normal range is in the Pacific Northwest - they migrate back and forth from Alaska down to northern California and back. Occasionally, a few have been seen in the upper Midwest and Northeast of the USA. This year a member of the species was recorded in the southeastern state of North Carolina for the 5th time. It is thought that this is a young male and he has been foraging in a suburban neighborhood for about 2 weeks so far.
Habitat:
A suburban neighborhood not far from a lake. It hides out in the shrubs and occasionally emerges to eat seed fallen on the ground under feeders and to drink from a bird bath.
Notes:
More than 110 birders have traveled to the homeowners' yard to see this bird. Everyone has been respecting safety rules, observing social distancing and wearing masks during this COVID epidemic time.
