I think I have reversed myself now, after having spent some time on Google, and looking at some of the other photographs that I took. The distinctive "hood" and colourings may suggest Grackle after all.
Thank-you for the possible identifiication. I am also thinking that it might be a Brewer's Blackbird as I don't recall there being as much purple on the head or brown/bronze on the breast.
I think it might be a Common Grackle. In the right light they are very iridescent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Grackle
