Horned Passalus Beetle
Odontotaenius disjunctus
30.5198, -84.1095
Field Notes
Habitat:
Found in the rotting sapwood of an Oak tree that had been laying on the ground for a couple of years.
Notes:
As I have been cutting up this log for firewood I have found an abundance of these beetles. I did find a couple of the larva but mostly adults.
The decaying wood is consumed by males, broken down in their digestive tracks. Then expelled and consumed by larvae and females as a more nutrient rich food source than the decayed wood.
