Field Notes

Description:

Possibly a sub species Buteo jamaicensis harlani (Harlan's Hawk). Debate about its status is still ongoing I believe. This juvenile appears to be the rufous morph of that subspecies. I know there are too many variables here - If anyone sees something here that could help ID this one please let me know.

Habitat:

Spotted in a tree next to a large open field at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge.

I love red tailed hawks, they have the most amazing cries.
