We have always called these Yellow Jackets since childhood. Both perched on a Passion Flower, late summer 2010.

Yellowjacket is a common term usually referring to a black and yellow wasp, which lacks the fuzzy hair seen on these insects. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowjacket for more information.
