Molting birds are tough to ID, luckily not too many other birds have a yellow stage and a red stage, both with black wings. Made him a bit easier :)
Thank you AshleyT. That could be it 'cause I caught a quick glimpse just enough to take this picture. It seemed to heading south indeed.
Breeding males are red with black wings, and nonbreeding males are yellow with black wings. Yours is in the transition stage as he is migrating :)
