Field Notes

Habitat:

inside my car... in Roanoke VA (western part of state, near Blue Ridge Mountains)

Notes:

Four most common ticks in Virginia, USA are said to be Deer Tick, American Dog Tick, Brown Dog Tick, Lone Star Tick. I do not recognize this as any of those. Could this be a Rocky Mountain Wood Tick?

Photo No. 1: is a very interesting, and a very educational photo....
This looks like a male Dermacentor variabilis. You also have Amblyomma maculatum in VA, which look very similar to dog ticks. But, dog ticks have short, pyramid-shaped mouthparts, whereas gulf coast ticks have long, rectangular mouthparts.
