Field Notes

Description:

Depending on the fertility of the soil these plants will grow to 10-15 feet tall. Plants in poor soil seldom reach 10 feet and produce small heads. This is a sweet banana plant, therefore in the Musa genus.

Habitat:

These are grown in gardens here in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

These are some of our favorites. The locals don't eat them that much, preferring to fill their gardens with platano, the cooking banana, so we always have people bringing them to us. This head would have weighed 50-60 lbs.
