Eastern Bumelia Borer
Plinthocoelium suaveolens suaveolens
37.2216, -95.7074
Field Notes
Description:
A spotting of the eastern bumelia borer. I've done a few borers like the cottonwood borer, and per the name this beetle's larvae feeds on the roots of bumelias or bully trees. I can't find much on this species, though their color patterns vary wildly. Most are completely metallic green but they also exist in metallic bronze, red, blue, and a mixture of the four. This one has a metallic green thorax and a metallic bronze abdomen and head. Beautiful and mysterious.
Habitat:
Central and Eastern US down into Mexico.
