Shea, the Tasmanian devil is only found wild in Tasmania, where it's numbers have declined by as much as 90% due to DFTD. Darren's spotting in Victoria was of a captive animal. Zoos and reserves are trying to breed healthy insurance populations, in case they are needed to repopulate the wild. Also, devils are nocturnal, so outside of a zoo you would never see one in the daytime.
thanks SusanEllison, And no HeatherMiller I don't believe there is any known cure are reason it has started
great sighting. I am glad to see one spotted.
Is there a treatment for the contagious cancer? That seems horribly devastating to a population. Does anyone know why it started? Are they stressed more than normal?
That's aweful... I wish I could join the team of scientists trying to help them!
it is a terrible disease, the only cancer that is contagious.. its wiped out half the population
Great spotting! Glad to see this little guy hasn't been infected by the facial disease!!
