My guess will be that it is the florida subspecies as the others that get to your area are migratory and are back on their breeding grounds in northern North America. Sandhills are warship gray, but this bird has been "painting" itself with mud, which individuals of mated pairs do. It may be partly ritualistic, but may also serve as camouflage when they are on the nest. Cool bird, great photo!
