You're right. I missed seeing the second photo completely. Very cool. Our loons (divers) exhibit this behavior as well; may help keep chicks out of danger from some of our larger fish and snapping turtles.
As you can see in the second pic there is even more than one hiding in mom´s back :-)
Lovely photograph! I like the chick riding on the adult's back.
