Pinus engelmanii
28.2678, -109.889
Field Notes
Description:
Pine tree native to northern Mexico; has exceptionally long ( up to 11 inches) needles. Tarahumara women trade with people at lower elevation where this tree grows to obtain the needles. They weave exquisite small baskets from these needles, dyed or natural.
Habitat:
Mid-elevation mountains of northern Mexico. It does not grow at the elevation of Divisadero; we saw this tree about 2000 feet lower in elevation as we descended from Divisadero toward El Fuerte by train.
Notes:
Very distinctive tree. The length of the needles is very noticeable.
