Field Notes

Description:

Wasp Mimic Fly. It was the only photo I got before it disappeared and the wing venation is not clear. Family Syrphidae.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.

Notes:

The larvae of this species feed on aphids and it has been reported from the southern US south through Argentina. This is a different species from a previously spotted wasp mimic from the same locality:

You´re wellcome! Nice to help.
Thank you so much Daniela. It seems to fit P. clavatus very well. It doesn't seem to have been reported from Chiapas yet, so I hope this will help fill in it's distributional range.
Hi, Lauren. Maybe this pointer could help, I´m not totally sure about the species but yes about the genus. http://bugguide.net/node/view/14095
