Description:

Growing on young pine tree - was smoother with interesting pattern during the very beginning of spring. Size: from the size of a penny to the size of a large marble

Notes:

I have no idea what this is. Is it a disease? Located in Northeast USA (Pennsylvania)

Thanks for your comment! There are no ants crawling on or around the tree. The brown things I took pictures of are scattered randomly around the branches and are really small; about the size of marble.
I think its ants house, some ants build their houses on trees.
