Field Notes

Description:

If I did not see it moving, I would not have even thought this was a living organism, but rather some piece of algae that got broken off or just some non-organic matter. I only found the one. It was shaped a little like an apple core, with a generally round shape but thinner in the middle. It was very small compared to the nearby algae.

It was the only thing moving in this frame. It seemed to be just making circles. Here is a very short video of it here: https://youtu.be/ar5evHXpDII

Habitat:

A marine biologist on board skimmed some plankton using really fine mesh nets and we took a drop from that sample and placed it under a microscope. The sample was skimmed in Izhut Bay just off Afognak Island in somewhat shallow water (less than 200 feet).

Notes:

In the first photo it is the darker one above the square frame. In the second photo it is just above the square. In the third photo it is just to the left of the sun icon.
