This seems to be a cross between a black squirrel and red squirrel.

I have seen these Eastern Grey Squirrels occasionally at my cottage too and they have different coloration than the same squirrels that live say, in Toronto. If you are interested in nature in the Kawarthas please join the mission http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/12780453.

It is may be a developed breed.
This is just a color variant of the Black squirrel which is really a variant of the Eastern gray squirrel. Many sightings have been reported of red tailed black squirrels in Ontario. Nice spotting!
