Description:
6.5 cm Adult female. (Males grow to 3.5 cm) Typical olivey grey/brown colour, useful for camouflage in trees. Antennae short and robust. Flies well, wings folded against body in rest. Also hops well on strong back legs. Identified by the shape and size of the pronotum (the shield type shape behind the head) and the vertical striped pattern in their eyes, visible at all growth stages.
Habitat:
Warm dry scrub, orchards, gardens.
Notes:
Nymphs occur in various colours - orange, green and brown. Often mistaken for locusts, a single grasshopper doesn't damage plants excessively. Go through several moults with wings developing fully when adult.
