Field Notes

Description:

An endangered subspecies of the least tern found on the Pacific Coast of the United States. This small species feeds on fish and aquatic invertebrates. It hovers above prospective food items before plunging down. However, unlike many other terns the least does not submerge itself fully when hunting, preferring to catch surface prey.
