Description:
The Green Rosella or Tasmanian Rosella (Platycercus caledonicus) is endemic to Tasmania and Bass Strait islands. At 37 cm (14.5 in) long it is the largest species of the Rosella genus. The male and female are generally similar in plumage, being predominantly black, green, and yellow in colour with a red band above the beak and blue cheeks; however, some females have red-orange colouration on the front of their necks.
Habitat:
Found throughout much of Tasmania and the Bass Straight islands. This one was found feeding in a eucalyptus tree near the mouth of the Pieman river in the Tarkine rainforest (http://www.tarkine.org/rainforest.php).
Notes:
These rosella parrots seem so colorful, until you see them in the dappled foliage where they often feed. Then you can see why they have developed the 'showy' plumage they have.
One of Tasmania's 11 endemic bird species.
