Field Notes

Description:

Tree reaches heights of about 75ft and trunk diameters of about 2.5 ft. Mature bark is white or bronze-white, peeling in thin layers. The inner surface of the bark is copper coloured and the young bark is shiny brown with pale brown lenticels. The leaves are alternate, ovate, 2-5 inches long, and double-toothed.

Habitat:

Spotted in resedential area, Toronto, Canada. After talking to some locals I learned that they head way more birches around the city and this area specificaly. They also told me that the trees that are around now not that healthy anymore judging by condition of their bark.

Notes:

Specie is native to Canada and United States. It is found in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, northwestern Ontario, Northern New York State, and New England. Generally found in northern habitats or high elevations, particularly on moist ground.
