Yes, they used to think it was the same species because they are similar, but it range is different, and skull.
Yes, Carolina, it is a mantled howler of Central America(Alouatta palliata)...the other species, the Yucatan black howler (Alouatta pigra) used to be considered the same species.
Alouatta palliata , (mantled howler) is the one in Costa Rica.....
I'm not sure about the ID suggested. Howler monkeys belong to genus Alouatta, and the Alouatta belzebul is native to Brazil. Maybe a Golden-mantled howler based in color and location.
